The idea

Windows' Snipping Tool covers quick snips, markup and text extraction; Solace Capture adds numbered steps, blur and watermarks, GIFs, clip trimming and a searchable local library.

Designed for Windows users who write documentation, report bugs, teach or support others and need screenshots, annotations, text extraction and short screen recordings.

About this product

Windows' Snipping Tool is fine for a quick snip, simple markup or copying text out of a screenshot. Numbered steps, blur, GIFs, trimmed clips and a searchable history of everything you have captured usually mean juggling several apps.

Solace Capture is a tray app for Windows that does all of it locally. Press Shift+Ctrl+A, click a window or drag a region, then crop, draw arrows and shapes, add text, numbered steps, label bubbles, mosaic or blur, or a tiled watermark. Pin a capture on top of other windows as a reference. Copy the text out of any image with the Windows OCR engine on your PC, and read QR codes. Record a region to MP4 with optional system sound and microphone, or save a silent GIF, then trim and rearrange clips into a new MP4. Every capture lands in a local library you can search, tag, favourite and export, with a recycle bin for mistakes. The interface is available in seven languages. An optional cloud OCR profile is off by default and only works with your own API key, and the app asks before each upload.

System and package

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit, with current updates
  • Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime (built into Windows 11 and current Windows 10)
  • No installer or administrator rights needed; the download is about 9 MB
  • Verify the published SHA-256 checksum before use

Install

Unzip the folder anywhere and run SolaceCapture.exe; it starts in the system tray.

Your library is stored in %AppData%\SolaceCapture and settings in %AppData%\com.solacesoftware.capture; to remove the app, quit it from the tray and delete its folder and those two.

First launch on Windows

The app isn’t code-signed yet, so the first time you open it Windows may show “Windows protected your PC.” Click More info, then Run anyway. After you buy, you can check the ZIP against the SHA-256 on this page. Questions: solacesoftware@smilingface.cloud

Published package checksum

After you buy, you can check that your download is exactly this file: same name, same size, same SHA-256.

  • Size: 9378013 bytes
  • SHA-256: 2c998cdfdc59516ff866f55b513ffdb9e7fa84cfdca47f654bbabc5df53e7f72
